A Study of the Perception on Age-friendly Home Modification of Middle-age Adult Children - Focus on Older Parents’ Home Modification -

Abstract

This study aimed to understand the perceptions of the age-friendly home modification of middle-aged adults whose older parent (s) are alive. A face-to-face survey using a self-administered questionnaire was conducted in Busan, Korea with middle-aged adults aged 45 to 64 years old and whose older parent (s) are 65 and older (N = 500). The survey items included personal characteristics, fall experiences, and fear of falling. It also included knowledge, perceptions (period and barriers to choosing age-friendly home modification), and intention to choose age-friendly home modification. Finally, it asked items about barriers and preferred methods of information, and the first contact person when choosing age-friendly home modification. Results show that the knowledge level of the participants regarding senior falls and age-friendly home modification was low, but they intended to assist their parent (s)’ home modification for their older parent (s)’ successful aging in place. In addition, it was found that there were significant correlations between fear of falling risk, older parent (s)’ health characteristics, and intention to age-friendly home modification. This study could be used as basic data for policy makers to accelerate age-friendly home modification.
