A Study on the Perceptions of Chinese Semi-dependent Older Adults on Age-friendly Home Modification Items

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the need and perception of Chinese semi-dependent older adults on the age-friendly home modification items contained in China’s ‘Guidelines on accelerating the implementation of Age-Friendly home modification projects for the elderly’ policy. Target population was semi-dependent older adults aged 60 and over. The data were collected through face to face survey from February 20 to March 31, 2022 (N = 47), and analyzed through descriptive statistics, independent specimen t-test, corresponding specimen t-test, and ANOVA using SPSS 26.0. The results are as follows. First, age-friendly home modification items, which have a high need for semi-dependent elderly people, were mainly focused on safe transferring and fall prevention. Some of these items were not included in the basic items of the policy. Second, needs on the age-friendly home modification items were differ based on the extent of health condition and housing characteristics. In conclusion, empirical research should be supported to provide the evidence for the basic items of the existing policy. Also, it is necessary to provide a customized, age-friendly home modification plan that reflects the characteristics of more specific group of semi-dependent older adults. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data not only in China but also in Korea, where the age-friendly home modification is expected in the future.
