Analysis of Residential Environment Affecting on the Perceived Fear of Crime of a Single Person’s Households in the University Town

Abstract

This study tries to find the possibility of crime prevention environment by improving urban spatial environment through the analysis of spatial environment property of university town where coexist residential and commercial areas. The survey research was carried out to examine the residents’ perceived fear of crime in the residential environment and cause of fear of crime through analyzing spatial environment property. Typically, 92 questionnaires were used for data analysis and the vicinity of G Univ. were investigated to examine the crime prevention system of the residential environment. Research target areas consist of areas A, B and C where have characteristics of mixture of residential and commercial areas, row-rise residential areas and areas within 10 minutes of walking from campus. The results revealed that, first, the field of vision among the physical factors is correlated with the fear of crime of residential environment in the University Town. Second, It seems necessary to actively promote emergency alarms and the installation and location of safety guard to reduce the residents’ fear of crime. Third, the fear of crime was found to be in direct proportion to insufficient lighting at road. Clear installation standards for lighting equipment are required.
