Comparison of Mothers’ Perceptions of Environmental Elements for Supporting Child Care Community in Multi-Family Houses and Apartments Areas

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore environmental factors that are required for natural formation of child care communities, to compare these factors among different residential areas and to identify their needs. For this, a qualitative study was carried out by focus group interview. Two group interviews were conducted on residents of apartments and multi-family houses (9 residents each) in Cheongju. Participants are mothers of infants aged 4 years or below in their 30s and 40s. The results include 1) neighborhood network size, frequency and places of encounter and interaction 2) available community space for rearers in residential area 3) perception and problem of outdoor communal space in each residential area and 4) demand for improvement. Child care communities were not built because there are no public spaces available for mothers in multi-family houses area. Mothers wanted to interact with other mothers in the outdoor space that supported child development, and also wanted to be able to walk safely with children or to use public transportation with a stroller. The results of this study imply that it is necessary to come up with a policy to create child care community spaces in residential areas and to devise urban reorganization plans that account for child care and outdoor activities of children.
