Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects on the characteristics of local residents’ value awareness from the realization of publicness by the environmental revamping of a public space in Gyeongsan. The site for this case is a waterside park that was enhanced in areas such as facilities, parking lots, and greens. For this study, we surveyed 220 residents around the park to investigate their opinions and their awareness of the value and publicness of the park. The analysis consisted of frequency calculation, as well as factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. First, the survey results revealed that, regarding the residents’ opinions, people thought that the park had become more attractive. However, they also had some negative opinions: the park and its surroundings had become cluttered with visitors and the mood for more development had increased. Second, with regard to the waterside park, the level of “emotional value awareness” was high, including the mean of values of positive “attitude” and “feeling”. In other words, people thought that the image of the neighborhood had gotten better and they visited the park more often; therefore the residents felt that the village had made strong progress. Third, the element of the “sense of place” was a very important variable influencing the four value awareness characteristics.
