Abstract

Despite the recent high interests in this research discipline, still, little is known about the effects of the built environment and mental health with the inconclusive study findings, which may reflect the poor understanding of the complexities underlying the relationship between built environment and mental health. This study seeks to pull together the existing evidence of the possible mechanism linking the neighborhood built environment and mental health, with a focus on individual-level behavioral and psycho-social mediating processes. We reviewed 22 domestic and foreign studies which include a total of 28 statistical examinations of mediating effects, and observed the significant mediating processes in 25 cases. Examined individual-level pathways linking neighborhood built environment and mental health include social relations between neighbors (such as social support, social interaction, and collective efficacy), stress and coping, and physical activity such as walking. There was no distinctive regional difference regarding the individual-level mediating processes.
