Abstract

The primary purpose of this research is to explore socioeconomic disparities of home-owning single-parent households (SPH) and dual-parent households (DPH) with children and to compare their housing wealth effects. Using the 18^th Korean Labour and Income Panel Study (KLIPS), this research identified 265 SPH and 1,756 DPH, and employed multiple regression analysis. The statistical findings reveal that the socioeconomic disparities between SPH and DPH remained distinct, proving that SPH are socially and economically vulnerable. Further, it’s found that housing wealth was positively associated with non-durable consumption of both SPH and DPH, and the consumption elasticity was much greater for SPH than for DPH and for female-headed SPH (FHSPH) than for male-headed SPH (MHSPH). Moreover, the empirical results indicate that housing wealth effects of FMHSPH and MHSPH varied with region, housing structure type, and household debt. In other words, the wealth effect became explicitly stronger for middle-aged FHSPH living in apartment (APT) of the non-Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) and holding a low level of household debt, and also larger for MHSPH carrying a low debt load in APT of SMA. Thus, this research addresses that rising value of housing asset boosts household spending of SPH, particularly FHSPH whose housing asset takes up a large portion of household wealth.
