A Survey of Experts’ Opinions on the Operation and Space Planning of Congregate Nursing Homes for the Elderly 노인요양공동생활가정 운영 및 공간계획을 위한 전문가 의견조사

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the direction of future system improvement and spatial planning by identifying the institutional and spatial conditions of congregate nursing homes for the elderly. A survey was conducted among the heads of 89 nursing homes. The survey questions related to general matters of the facility, difficulties in opening and operating the facility, institutional standards, location and building types, community exchange activities, building plans, and space satisfaction. The main findings were as follows: First, Although residential areas account for about 50 percent of the elderly's nursing homes, facilities located in natural green areas also account for about one-third of them. In addition, about half of the congregate nursing homes for the elderly were newly built, and 40% of them occupied detached houses or apartments when using existing buildings. Second, utility space(e.g., storage space and office space) was found to be in need of renovation or extension. Rather than setting up a separate area, space for interacting with others in community was often confined to the dining area within the facilities. Third, there was an opinion that the main reason for dissatisfaction with spaces was darkness or a lack of family atmosphere, and the noise produced by other occupants resulted in the highest contributor (20%) of hindering the sense of homely feeling.
