Housing Policy Preferences Considering Marriage and Changes in Marriage Intentions Based on Support for Preferred Policies

Abstract

Recognizing that securing housing is perceived as a significant barrier to marriage, various housing policies targeting the youth demographic have been implemented. This study aims to identify which of these policies are preferred by young individuals considering marriage and to assess the anticipated changes in their willingness to marry upon receiving such support. An online survey was conducted among 310 unmarried youths of marriageable age, and the valid responses were analyzed. The findings indicate that respondents perceive housing issues as critical in the context of marriage, with a particular emphasis on the burden of housing costs. While ‘housing finance loans’ emerged as the most preferred policy, there was a general inclination towards favoring multiple policies rather than a single one. Notably, when considering the impact of preferred policy support on marriage intentions, public rental housing demonstrated a relatively stable effect, as it had the lowest proportion of individuals reporting no change in marriage intention and the highest proportion indicating a significant positive change. These results can serve as a foundational basis for formulating housing policies aimed at supporting marriage among the youth.
