Influence on Young Persons’ Intention to Participate in Housing Information, Education and Counseling Programs

Abstract

This study was aimed to explore young persons’ intention to participate in housing information, education and counseling (HIEC) programs and characteristics influencing their intention. From September 12 to 21, 2018, an online survey was conducted amongst young, single individuals (age between 19 and 39) and responses from 600 renters were analyzed. The major findings were as follows: (1) About 23.0% of the subjects showed their intention to participate in future HIEC programs. (2) Subjects were found to perceive HIEC program as important. (3) Results from a series of chi-square tests and discriminant analyses corresponded to indicate that subjects who had some college or higher educational attainments, had experienced problems during selection and/or leasing procedures for their current home, had searched for housing-related information, and/or perceived HIEC programs more important tended to be more positive regarding participation in future programs. (4) In particular, the final discriminant model was found 95% accurate in predicting individuals with intention to participate. Here, perceived importance of programs was found most influential. Thus, the research found that the most effective approach to increasing young people’s participation in HIEC programs would be by improving their perception on the importance of the programs.
