Prioritizing the Efficient Implementation of Residential Environment Improvement Projects in Small and Medium-Sized Cities

Abstract

The Urban Environment Improvement Project aims to renovate deteriorated residential areas and improve urban infrastructure. In non-metropolitan regions, its effectiveness has been hindered by low resettlement rates, limited feasibility, and insufficient consideration of local needs. This study examined projects in Gyeongsangnam-do from 1990 to 2023 to address these challenges. By reviewing prior studies and using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), the study evaluated project priorities and proposed improvement strategies. The analysis revealed that ‘Improvement of residents’ living environment’ was the highest priority, highlighting its importance in enhancing quality of life. ‘Improvement of housing environment’ and ‘Enhancement of natural surveillance in public spaces’ were identified as critical factors at subsequent levels. This study systematically analyzes the challenges of urban renewal in Gyeongsangnam-do, offering tailored strategies for small and medium-sized cities. By applying the AHP method, it provides practical insights for more efficient and targeted urban improvement initiatives.
