Research Trends of Elderly Supportive Housing for Aging in the Right Place - Focused on the Recent Literature and Korean Cases -

Abstract

Korea is rapidly entering a super-aged society, leading to an increase in demand for housing and welfare services for older adults. The concept of aging in place, which supports older adults to live independently in the familiar homes and communities for as long as possible, has emerged as an important policy agenda. However, the concept has not been sufficiently applied in residential environments in Korea. In particular, the vulnerable elderly households living in public rental housing often experience both housing constraints and limited access to services. This study aims to analyze recent research trends related to supportive housing for the elderly since 2020 and to examine the applicability of integrated housing models for aging in the right place (AIRP). Total 31 domestic and international studies were reviewed and classified. In addition, in-depth interviews with elderly residents were conducted to explore the factors influencing AIRP. The findings indicate that sustainable AIRP is shaped by the interaction of five factors: physical environment, financial security, care service access, social capital, and psychological continuity. This study suggests that housing policies for older adults should adopt integrated approaches that converge residential environments, care services, and technological supports, and provides policy implications for developing a Korean model of AIRP.
