A Comparative Study of Older Adults’ Perceptions on Housing for Fall Prevention among Older Adults with and without Falls

Abstract

This study aims to compare the fall-related characteristics and perceptions on the fall-prevention housing among older adults with and without falls. This study surveyed 30 older adults with fall experience and 30 older adults without fall experience in Urumqi, Xinjiang, China. It reflected the differences in physical and psychological condition changes, and differences in the importance and satisfaction of fall-prevention home modification among them. This study found older people’s physical functioning deteriorated significantly because of falls. Regarding the fear of falling, older adults with fall experience are significantly more afraid of falling in their current home than the elderly without fall experience. The two groups both were not satisfied with their current home in the aspect of fall-prevention and showed a high awareness of the importance and necessity of the fall-prevention home modification. Some urgent home modification items were found from the IPA(Importance-Performance Analysis). It is necessary to analyze the reasons why fall prevention housing modification cannot be actively implemented in the future and to explore plans to expand fall prevention housing modification.
