Current Research Trend and Directions for Future Studies on Housing in relation to Child Care in Korea - A Scoping Review of Academic Journals -

Abstract

In South Korea, which currently has the lowest birth rate in the world, establishing a child-friendly residential environment to support child care in the long term is a critical task. This study aims to analyze the scope and trends of existing research on housing in relation to child care and, based on this analysis, explore future research directions. 49 recently published Korean journal articles were examined using the scoping review method. The analysis revealed five major themes in housing research related to child care: (1) residential location and mobility related to childcare, (2) demand and satisfaction for a childcare-friendly environment, (3) development and application of evaluation indicators/models for childcare-friendly environment, (4) housing characteristics influencing childbirth and childcare, and (5) housing policies focused on childbirth and childcare. The majority of these studies were published in journals related to housing, architecture, and design. Quantitative research methods were significantly more prevalent than qualitative approaches, and a concentration of studies in the Seoul metropolitan area was observed. Based on the discussions and analyses of this study, several future research directions are proposed. These include the development of a systematic roadmap for the provision of childcare facilities, the expansion of research projects involving actual caregivers, and a comprehensive evaluation of the effectiveness of existing policies.
