A Study on the Types of Traditional Korean Houses and Regional Distribution in the Literature of the Korean Peninsula

Abstract

Research on traditional houses (minga) on the Korean Peninsula has been conducted for approximately one hundred years, yet no unified classification system has been established due to persistent disagreements among scholars over typological criteria and regional boundaries. Against this background, the present study systematically classifies the floor plan types of traditional Korean houses and synthesizes their regional distribution based on published literature from scholars in South Korea, North Korea, and Japan. The typological framework is organized around the concepts of kan (Bay) and kyeo (Barrel), and regional boundaries are examined against the traditional mountain-system framework known as sangyeongdo. The results identify a total of 15 regional distribution areas, comprising 1-barrel regions (8), a 1.5-barrel region of the Jeju type (1), and 2-barrel regions (6), with an additional 4 localities classified as special local types. By integrating previously disparate classifications under a unified kan–kyeo framework and presenting the results as a visualized distribution map, this study offers foundational reference data for future research on traditional Korean architecture.
