Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the spatial conditions of temporary housing facilities and propose operational strategies to strengthen the community’s disaster resilience. The facilities examined were three resident cultural and welfare centers in Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, designated as temporary housing facilities. The research methodology combined online surveys and field investigations. The field investigations focused on assessing the management status of safety facilities and the operational conditions of the spaces. Based on the survey findings, the potential for space utilization at each disaster stage, according to the spatial configuration of each facility, was classified through expert Focus Group Interviews (FGI). The results indicated that although all three locations were equipped with disaster prevention resources, such as disaster and safety education, experience, and communication facilities, these were not being utilized effectively. Additionally, despite being designated as temporary housing facilities, there was insufficient provision of sleeping, hygiene, and cooking facilities necessary to support residential life during a disaster. Furthermore, it was found that there was no plan in place to determine how to accommodate and utilize space facilities according to the number of people that could be sheltered.
