Abstract

This study is a comparative analysis on the cases of flat apartment block by Walter Gropius and Alvar Aalto constructed in Interbau Exhibition in Berlin Hansaviertel, an architectural event after the end of World War II. The cases, designed by two masters of modernism, are meaningful examples of a paradigm shift in collective housing planning when the architectural ideology for the mass production as well as aesthetic diversification with technological improvement was needed. They intended to support the productivity of housing with standardization and to achieve the design innovation with formative plasticity at the same time. However, the planning strategies of two architects were differed. For example, Gropius' unit plan adopted a quantitatively calculated standard type which was similar to the previous period, while Aalto applied a originally created open and free plan. Furthermore, in terms of building mass, typical block plan, elevation as well as material and color application two architects revealed the new design approach. This architectural exhibition clearly showed that the era of early modernism was ended and that quality rather than quantity was pursued while inheriting the idea of internationalism and functionalism.
