Analysis of Social Issues, Research Trends, and Prospects for Development of Age-Friendly Smart Homes in Korea

Abstract

South Korea’s aging rate is projected to surpass 20.3% by 2025, officially entering a super-aged society. As the elderly face physical decline and decreased participation in social and economic activities, the time they spend at home increases. Additionally, living in unfamiliar environments can lead to emotional stress and anxiety for older adults, emphasizing the importance of “Aging in Place,” where they continue living in familiar settings. Against this backdrop, research on age-friendly smart homes has been actively conducted, integrating technologies such as healthcare, IoT, ubiquitous computing, and networks. This study aims to analyze the social issues, research trends, and previous studies on age-friendly smart homes from 2001 to 2024 using text mining techniques. The analysis was conducted in five-year intervals starting from 2001, utilizing 702 press releases from 85 media outlets and 217 academic studies as data sources. The findings reveal that most studies on older adults primarily focus on physical health due to declining physical abilities, while research addressing their social and emotional needs remains relatively scarce. This study aims to serve as foundational data to bridge these research gaps and support future studies in addressing the holistic needs of older adults.
