Abstract

The purpose of this study was to provide useful information for Korean seniors to continue aging in place stably at their current house or region 1) by investigating their intention and the reasons to age in place, 2) by identifying preparedness for old age and perception of elderly housing, and 3) by analyzing the differences in related variables by their intention to age in place. For this purpose, a survey was conducted involving 434 individuals who were considered late-middle-aged or elderly (born before 1963). The results showed that the group with the intention in aging in place included a relatively high ratio of residents living in rural areas, consisting of single elderly household. The group intending in aging in place was highly concerned with health care, hobbies/leisure activities, and building a friendly relationship with one’s spouse, neighbors and friends as part of their preparation for old age. Therefore, it is necessary to devise detailed housing plans for the elderly with their characteristics and requirements taken into consideration. In addition, just as much thought should be given to finding alternative housing plans desired by those who do not want to age in place.
