Abstract

This study investigates Chat-bang, a distinctive feature of traditional Jeju houses, through a quantitative and qualitative analysis of 233 surveyed houses from Professor Kim Hong-sik’s research (1972-1984).The findings reveal that Chat-bang was present in approximately 25.3% of cases and can be categorized into three types: Toe-maru type(elevated wooden floor), Maru-bang type(wooden floor), and Heukbadak type(earthen floor). This classification refines existing definitions and highlights its structural diversity. A notable regional disparity was observed, with Chat-bang more common in the western area than in the east, potentially linked to differences in vernacular housing structures rather than Confucian influences. Functionally, Chat-bang was closely tied to Jeong-ji(a transitional kitchen area) rather than Sang-bang(the main living room), serving primarily as an auxiliary kitchen rather than a formal dining room. Its role as an intermediary space between the kitchen and main quarters suggests an effort to streamline household workflows, potentially indicating early modernization in Jeju housing.In conclusion, Chat-bang reflects Jeju’s unique domestic and labor patterns, particularly in relation to women’s roles. As a significant element in the history of Korean kitchens, its development warrants further interdisciplinary study to explore its broader socio-cultural implications.
