A Study on the Growth Stage of City Center According to Residential Development : Focusing on the case of Daegu City

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to “grow in Jung-gu, the central city of Daegu, as the four stages of urban development, as Leo van den Berg argued, due to the concentration and dispersion of the population between the central city of Daegu and the surrounding regions. Under the hypothesis that there will be stages”, we tried to identify the stages of growth in the city center. The research method analyzed the number of households in housing construction according to the Daegu Metropolitan Housing Statistical Yearbook. First, the geocoding program was used to convert the address of an apartment complex into coordinates, and then a distribution map by year of housing complex construction was created to analyze the location change process. As a result of the study, first, it was confirmed that Daegu Metropolitan City is currently in the process of suburbanization and reverse urbanization as apartment housing construction is actively built in the outskirts of downtown such as Suseong-gu and Dalseo-gu, and second, the growth process of Jung-gu, the downtown area of Daegu, is changing into three stages. In other words, until 1993, the first stage, the centralization stage, until 2003, the second stage, the congestion stage, and after 2003, the third stage, the re-centralization stage, showed an S-shaped growth pattern.
