A Study on Community Design Methods for Public Spaces through the Theory of Desire for Others - Focusing on Riken Yamamoto Community Design Projects -

Abstract

This study explored community design methods for public spaces through visual manipulation and expression based on Lacan’s ‘theory of desire for the other’, focusing on Riken’s work. The results of the study are as follows. First, the methods of expressing desire through gaze derived from the investigation and analysis of previous studies can be divided into ‘unfamiliar gaze,’ ‘multiple gazes,’ and ‘momentary gaze.’ Second, the methods of community activation to satisfy the ‘desires of others’ in public spaces are as follows. ‘regionality’ induces ‘copying’ through ‘unfamiliar gaze’ and ‘multiple gaze’ through ‘form’, thereby showing regional characteristics and strengthening the solidarity of residents. ‘Symbolism’ can satisfy various desires by utilizing all visual expression elements. ‘Openness’ can induce community through ‘multiple gazes’. Among them, it promotes ‘inclusiveness’ and ‘interaction’ by blurring the boundaries of space through ‘materials’ and ‘forms’ and allows residents to actively participate in activities. ‘Support’ utilizes ‘materials’ and ‘forms’ to induce users’ access and movement through ‘copying’ and ‘dedifferentiation’, and supports activity through ‘concealment’ to enable communication between users and public spaces. Third, in places where external non-specific objects come and go, it is advantageous to emphasize ‘openness’ with ‘multiple gazes’ by relaxing boundaries through ‘materials’ and ‘forms.’ And in public spaces centered on residents, it is most advantageous to emphasize ‘symbolism’ through ‘forms’ that connect separate spaces, such as ‘unfamiliar gazes,’ ‘multiple gazes,’ and ‘momentary gazes.’ Therefore, it is necessary to plan community design in a differentiated way by considering the target’s range of movement, directionality, and fixed overlapping lines of sight.
