Frequency and Importance of Furniture Use According to the Lifestyles of Single-Households

Abstract

Single-households have continued to increase, embracing diverse values and leading the formation of new consumption cultures. They have a great impact across all industries, particularly in the high demand for single-households that can handle small residential spaces and individual lifestyles. However, the development of household that reflects various demands of single-households is insufficient due to problems such as design and mass production of products limited to storage and minimalism. The purpose of this study is to categorize the lifestyle of single-households and to present the basic data for the development of single-households by lifestyle type through the analysis about the frequency of use and importance of behavioral supported furniture. This study has developed a survey tool for single-households' lifestyle measures and behavioral supported furniture through previous studies and literature reviews. The results of the survey were analyzed using descriptive statistics, factor analysis, cluster analysis, and one-way-anova analysis using the SPSS program. Based on the results of the analysis, we propose a meaningful behavioral support furniture for each lifestyle type. As a result, single-households were named as four types of life styles: ‘passive social activity type’, ‘economic indoor leisure type’, ‘practical trend pursuit type’, and ‘outgoing self-satisfaction type’. There were significant differences in frequency and importance by type regarding behavioral support furniture.
