Space Grammar of Apartment Unit Plans in Malaysia : Focused on PR1MA Project 말레이시아 아파트 평면의 공간문법 : PR1MA 프로젝트를 중심으로

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find the planning characteristics of PR1MA apartments in Malaysia through plan analysis. In the view point that specific rules exist in determining the arrangement of each room, emphasis is placed on grasping the rules of spatial composition and the design process. Space grammar was used for the analysis method of the unit plan. The characteristics of the Malaysian apartment unit plan derived through the analysis are as follows. The rule of primary space is E-(K)-D-L. Living room is arranged in the front considering the view, lighting, and ventilation, and the dining room is arranged in the middle by connecting to the other spaces. Kitchen located at the rear where the yard and air-well are located. And the public area and the private area are clearly separated, and the 3-bay 3-bedroom type is preferred. In addition, the yard and air-well are characteristic spaces to overcome the climate condition. In conclusion, it can be seen that Malaysian apartments have strong common attributes in the main space arrangements in terms of space arrangement rules, and that autonomous changes appear in the arrangement of bedrooms as the number of bays. In other words, as the importance of private space is emphasized while maintaining the layout of the basic space even with the increase in the number of bays, the bedroom is accommodating the space by favoring the layout of the front part considering the view, lighting, and ventilation like the living room.
