Abstract

The objective of this study is to explore factors associated with social capital by focusing on the ‘Amichojang’ area, which is one of the sites of urban regeneration project in Busan. Particularly, this study investigates how resident participation in urban regeneration project affects formation of social capital in this area. Using the 426 survey data collected from the neighborhoods in 2017 and 2018, we examine the relationship between individual characteristics and social capital. Our results show that resident participation in the urban regeneration project is positively associated with social capital, suggesting that establishment of neighborhood corporation or social enterprise can increase social cohesion and inclusiveness, and thus contribute to formation of social capital. Our results also show that community activities are positively related to the social norm, social networks, and social trust, implying that cultural activities, volunteer activities, and community service activities enhance social capital in the neighborhoods of urban regeneration. Findings suggest that planners and policy makers should find a variety of ways that consider low-income, unemployed, and elderly people for promoting urban regeneration projects. In order to achieve the goal, it should be recognized that resident participation and economic renewal are the keys for achieving sustainable and successful urban regeneration projects.
