The Composition of Multi-functional Flexible Furniture Design in Housing Type

Abstract

With the background of increased single-person households residing in a relatively downsized space due to the absence of household members, this study suggests the composition direction of multi-functional furniture design through the analysis on the frequency of furniture use and the preferred characteristics of multi-functional furniture in accordance with the composition type of residential space for single-person households. As research methods, first, the housing type of single-person households and the characteristics of multi-functional furniture are considered through literature/preceding researches. Second, a research tool is developed based on the considered contents, and a survey is conducted for single-person households. Third, The type of housing and the frequency of furniture use and the preference of multi-functional flexible furniture characteristics are analyzed. Lastly, The composition direction of multi-functional flexible furniture design is suggested considering the frequency of furniture use, housing type, and multi-function flexible furniture characteristics. In this study, the furniture with high frequency of use in each housing type included drying rack, bed, mirror, and wardrobe. Regarding the characteristics of multi-functional flexible furniture, the preferred consciousness was shown in storage, folding, and combination. Thus, this study suggests the composition of customized multi-functional flexible furniture design considering the frequency of furniture use in each housing type and the preferred characteristics of multi-functional flexible furniture.
