Factors Influencing Housing Poverty Types of Single-Person Household and Their Effect of Life Satisfaction: A Study Using Latent Class Analysis (LCA)

Abstract

This study aims to categorize housing poverty among single-person households in Korea, identify influencing factors by type, and evaluate the impact of each type on life satisfaction. Using data from the 17th Korean Welfare Panel, latent class analysis and multinomial logistic analysis were conducted on 2,970 single-person households. As a result of latent class analysis, housing poverty among single-person households in Korea was divided into three types: households meeting minimum housing standards (83.0%), households failing to meet essential facility standards (2.0%), and households failing to meet structural performance standards (15.0%). As a result of multinomial logistic regression analysis, the main factors of households meeting minimum housing standards included gender, full-time employment, education level, and monthly rent. The influencing factors of households failing to meet essential facility standards and structural performance standards included control factors such as gender and education level, as well as occupancy type and housing type. The results of a comprehensive analysis of factors affecting life satisfaction showed that both types that did not meet the criteria were less satisfied with their living environment, family income, and family relationships than those that met the minimum housing standards. Based on the research results, practical policies were proposed to improve the life satisfaction of single-person households facing housing poverty.
