Abstract

Korea is expected to see a steady increase in the number of elderly disabled people in line with the rapid aging of its population, thereby required deliberate social preparedness. Meanwhile, the number of old decaying houses over 30 years and their environmental press continues to increase. In order for the elderly to age in place in their community and homes, need to be urgently sought by making appropriate cost effective aging friendly home modifications. The purpose of this study is to delineate the process from identifying the need through finding customized home modification plans to actual implementation for existing housing to enhance housing suitability with lower extremity dysfunction. As a result, the customized home modification process was described and accordingly final appropriate action was shown in consideration of the physical and health condition of residents, the situation of the houses, and financial limit. The results of this study suggests the aging friendly customized home modification is an effective interventional tool to both promote aging in place and implement community integrated care policy in a low cost and high effective way. This study is expected to serve as a stepping stone to spread awareness of appropriate home modification as a strategy to cope with aging risk efficiently and effectively.
