An Analysis of the Influence of Neighborhood Environment Characteristics on Walking Activity and Health Perception of the Elderly by Walking Purpose : Focusing on Bulkwang 2-dong in Seoul

Abstract

In relation to the quality of life of the elderly, recently, the importance of the neighborhood environment which is the main activity space of the elderly, has been highlighted. However, little research has analyzed the characteristics that influence walking activity and health perception of the elderly by classifying the environment based on walking purposes. Accordingly, this study comprehensively analyzed the effects of environmental characteristics, walking activities based on walking purpose, and health awareness among the elderly living in Bulgwang 2-dong, Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul by using the PLS structural equation. The analysis result found, first, in the case of the purpose of ‘'use of convenience facilities and shopping’, accessibility to facilities, quality of the walking environment, and individual characteristics all had a positive effect on walking activity of the elderly. Second, in the case of the ‘stroll and exercise’ purpose, the quality of the walking environment and individual characteristics had a positive influence on the walking activity of the elderly. Third, concerning the purpose ‘amity and social activity’, the use of land and individual characteristics had a negative influence, while the quality of walking environment had the most positive effect. Lastly, the elderly's walking activities had a positive effect on both purposes, except walking for amity and social activity.
