Urban Form Changes, Remains, and Urban Planning Characteristics of Korea National Housing Corporation (KNHC) Housing Complexes - based on KNHC Records from 1954 to 1970 -

Abstract

The KNHC housing complexes are one of the historically significant urban fabrics comprising Seoul’s old residential areas. The study focuses on the five KNHC housing complexes where district-unit plan is designated for the entire complex area and analyzes the relationship between their current remaining status and the designated matters of the urban management plans. Even though the five complexes share the similar urban morphology, each district-unit plan exhibits divergent approaches toward conserving the existing urban context and achieving the development potentials. The study analyzes this diverse situation and proposes three positions creating a spectrum between the dichotomy of preservation and demolition, which are ‘overall maintaining of existing urban context’, ‘specific maintaining of existing urban context’, and ‘transformation of existing urban context’. By outlining limitations and points for improvement found on the sites, this study aims to delineate issues for the future urban management plan in Seoul to find a way to maintain the urban context of long-standing residential areas by considering both their lasting urban fabrics and continuous new constructions.
