Improvement of External Environment Access Elements of Village Community Space for Senior-Friendly Environment - Focusing on Village Sarangchae in Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City -

Abstract

The rapid aging of the population in Korea is causing various social problems such as increased care burden, economic poverty, social isolation, and intergenerational conflicts, and accordingly, the importance of social participation of the elderly and community environment is being emphasized. This study aims to suggest ways to improve the physical accessibility of village community spaces so that the elderly can live safely and independently in the living area near their residences and have opportunities for interaction with residents and social participation. Through a review of previous studies, the physical accessibility factors that are friendly to the elderly were derived as securing safe walking rights, providing selectable conveniences, easy-to-find spaces, visibility of entrances and exits, and connections with living facilities. Based on this, the case analysis of five village Sarangchae in Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City showed that the connectivity with living facilities was high, while other factors were found to be insufficient. Based on the analysis results, the improvement measures suggested were improving the walking environment, expanding rest facilities, improving visibility, and strengthening connections with living convenience facilities. This study aims to contribute to establishing a foundation for independent activities of the elderly within the local community by creating a senior-friendly village community space.
