Abstract

This study aims to suggest the policy direction of urban regeneration activation in the era of population decline. To this end, as a case study, we classify Gyeongsangbuk-do areas faced with population extinction risk by the levels of population extinction risk and regional decline. As a measurement, the diagnostic index of urban regeneration activation areas was applied to classify which is commonly used in the field. The study showed several outstanding results. Firstly, 95% of Eup-Myeon-Dong, which are urban regeneration activation areas meeting the legal requirements, are suffering from population extinction. 86% out of them were classified as regional decline areas. Secondly, urban regeneration activation areas were classified into five types according to the degree of population extinction and regional decline risks. Areas with high severity of population extinction and regional decline risks require more roles of public intervention for regional revitalization. Thirdly, the relationship between urban regeneration areas selected in the past and the classification in this study showed the areas with higher degrees of population extinction and regional decline risks were more frequently selected as the urban regeneration project areas.
