Abstract

Haeng-bok (happiness) Public Rental Housing (HPRH), which is located in the center of cities near public transportation, is a type of social housing for the younger generation such as newly married couples, college students, and new employees. Furthermore, the community facilities of HPRH are provided to gather the residents and neighbors in the local community, and to improve the quality of life not only for the residents but also for the neighbors. Therefore, community facilities in HPRH should be investigated whether they are provided and operated to serve the purpose. This research aims to investigate the current situation of the community facilities in HPRH to find out the suitability of community facilities planning and use, and to suggest the solutions for the improvement. Four cases in the Seoul metropolitan area were selected, and field survey and face-to-face interviews were conducted with 12 residents and 4 facility managers to investigate utilization, satisfaction, and needs of residents about the community facilities. The results were as follows. First, the community facilities in HPRH were not properly used because they do not reflect the characteristics and needs of the target residents. Second, the residents in HPRH had negative thoughts about social interaction with neighbors of the local community. On the behalf of that the residents agreed to have social interaction among residents in HPRH. Third, the community facilities were not properly used due to the absence of the resident organization and community programs. Therefore HPRH is in need of the experts or education programs which can help organizing the resident community and making community programs.
