User Participated Planning of Small Community House for the Formerly Homeless

Abstract

The increase of the vulnerable population threatens the safety of both the community and the individual in this modern era. It is necessary to develop housing alternatives to decrease the social and economic burdens for stabilization. Recently, supportive housing policies have begun to encompass the practice of stabilizing housing for the homeless, because it is an effective measure. Supportive housing can be planned as community housing for efficient service and social interaction. The purpose of this study is to extract the needs of the formerly homeless for small community house. The research methods include workshops in which users can participate using intuitive and interactive tools. The tools include plans, images, and 3D models. Three groups of 9 previously homeless people participated in the workshop. The results showed participants’ various needs. They asked 4-20 households as the proper neighborhood, healthcare, and social interaction for community living, as well as the general and realistic job functions for community work. For the community placement, they preferred that windows democratically faced south. The community living space is typically located inside the community, while community work space is outward. The needs of the previously homeless participants were analyzed directly. This is significant that the vulnerable’s participation and abilities were improved by the educational planning workshop.
