A Study on the Floor Plans Characteristics of Traditional Houses in Iriki Fumoto Village, Kagoshima, Japan 일본 가고시마 이리키 후모토 마을의 전통주택의 평면 특성에 관한 연구

Abstract

This study aims to examine the prototype floor plan features of houses built in the modern period, which have been maintained in the village. To do so, this study obtained the prototype floor plans of 27 sample houses using data that had been gathered since 1991, and analyzed their floor plan features. As a result, this study found that traditional houses in Iriki Fumoto Village had their own unique features as per their physical and social environments, which included Iriki Fumoto Village’s climate and culture, while they shared the common characteristics of traditional Japanese houses. The floor plans showed that a separate building was combined with each house, with which connections were made directly, and the Roka (corridor) was installed. In addition, the flexibility of the room, which could expand the reception area, raised the hierarchy of the patriarch. In the Naganoma (space for women), access to the inside of the house was connected through a single route, and as a result, this house keeping space was protected and secured from the outside. The floor plan of traditional houses in Iriki Fumoto Village had been passed on horizontally and vertically, and 4 types of floor plans were found regardless of the particular period.
