The Effects of the Pedestrian Environment on the Vitalization of the Old Downtown Commercial Area : Focused on Art Street in Gwangju 보행환경이 원도심 상권 활성화에 미치는 영향 : 광주광역시 예술의 거리를 대상으로

Abstract

The effects of safety, convenience and urban functions, which are factors of urban pedestrian environment on pedestrian’s satisfaction, frequency of visits, and vitalization of commercial area were verified for pedestrians in the old downtown located in Gwangju city. The surveyed data was analyzed by SPSS program, and multi-regression analysis was performed. The main results are as follows: First, safety, convenience, and urban functionality, all factors of the pedestrian environment were found to have positive effects on the pedestrian’s satisfaction. Second, safety and convenience, which are factors in the pedestrian environment of the old downtown were found to have a positive effect on the frequency of visits to the old downtown, and the urban functionality was found to have no effect. Third, it was found that only the safety factors of the pedestrian environment in the old downtown had a significant positive effect on activating the commercial area of the old downtown. The conclusion is that the safety factor among the pedestrian environment factors has a positive effect on both pedestrian’s satisfaction, frequency of visits to the old downtown, and activation of commercial area, especially the safer the pedestrian environment, the more frequent pedestrians visit the old downtown.
