Study on Visual Interest in Community Spaces with Biophilic Design Elements

Abstract

This study is to explore the application of natural environmental factors in community space design, focusing on the visual interest of biophilic design elements. We investigate how to apply these elements in community space planning. Through eye-tracking experiments and questionnaires, we evaluate visual attention distribution and spatial perception, exploring the relationship between perception and pupil size change. Heat map analysis showed participants focused mainly on biophilic elements, especially plants, smooth curves, and natural light. Further analysis found that participants rated yoga areas significantly higher in community spaces designed for exercise, accompanied by a relative reduction in pupil size, compared with crowded or stimulating spaces such as fitness areas. This finding aligns with previous studies, indicating a positive correlation between negative spatial assessment and pupil dilation. Ultimately, spatial images with biophilic design elements received higher emotional ratings, creating a welcoming atmosphere. This study demonstrates that incorporating biophilic design into community spaces can relieve fatigue and stress, improve enjoyment, and promote mental health. Future community space design should emphasize biophilic elements to create more livable and healthy environments.
