Abstract

Older people are more keen to the immediate environment of everyday life. They tend to have limited mobility due to decline of physical capacity, which makes them spend more time in the easily accessible areas such as neighborhood around their home. Neighbors can play an important role in social life of older people. Researchers examined neighborhoods of Seoul and interviewed 99 older people for over 9 month period. Older people had closer relationship in non-apartment housing. In fact, their social activities were not merely for communications and conversations but also for helping each other to counter the diminishing capabilities with aging. For example, a group of elders selected gathering location near where their elder member with walking difficulties lived so that the member didn’t have to walk far. In a sense, this was ‘selection’ of location to ‘optimize’ gathering and social activities as a way of ‘compensating’ disability, which can be interpreted as an adoption of “Selection”, “Optimization”, and “Compensation” (SOC) theory by Baltes (1990). In particular this study links the SOC to the territoriality that was provided by physical structure of street space. The physical environment of neighborhood was examined to identify potential physical elements that might contribute to the territoriality for occupying street space for social activities of elders.
