Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the appropriateness of the housing size and Composition of permanently rental apartments according to the residents’ housing cost burden. To this end, data from 2016 Korea Housing Survey was utilized by only selecting the data of permanently rental apartment residents. Some of the retrieved questionnaires were excluded when it was difficult to find out about the housing appropriateness from the perspective of minimum housing standards. Thus, completed questionnaires of a total of 323 permanent rental apartment residents nationwide were utilized for analysis. The results of the analysis show that approximately 30% of the respondents had housing cost overburden, and the majority of them were low-income elderly living alone. An analysis on the appropriate size of the housing currently resided by these elderly was conducted, and the results of the analysis show that the elderly had a high tendency of living in a permanently rental apartment that exceeds the minimum standards in terms of housing area and the number of rooms. The results of this study can be utilized as preliminary data in preparing standards for the appropriate size of permanently rental apartments.
