A Study of High Class Houses Byeoldang in the Early Chosen Dynasty 조선전기 상류주택 별당의 기능 및 건축형식 연구

Abstract

In the high class houses of the chosen Dynasty, Byeoldang is usually understood as an extension of Sarang. The Byeoldang, which is built on the front of the house, is a meeting place for clan villages or a space for social exchange, and serves as a place for public conversation in the community or as a social, economic and cultural center. But this is the function of the late Chosen. Therefore, the Byeoldang of the high-class houses built before the Imjin war is evaluated as a rare example that does not correspond with the trend of the times. The Byeoldang of early Chosen is a closed space with a wall structure of 4-6 kan of Daecheong and 2kan of Ondolbang. The wall dividing Daecheong and Ondolbang is provided with a window of meoleum, therefore Ondolbang and Daechung are completely divided spaces. Daecheong, which is open on the Korean peninsula, is a symbolic space that is difficult to use in winter but Daechung, with its walls, is a daily space that can be used for all seasons. Especially, the the area of the Byeoldang is arranged in parallel with the residential area, so that the privacy of each area is ensured and access from the outside is easy.
