Neighborhood Built Environmental Attributes Which Can Have Effects on Residents’ Mental Health and Well-being - A Qualitative Study in Seoul -

Abstract

The relationship between neighborhood built environment and residents’ mental health can be diverse according to the environmental context where a study is conducted. This study tried to identify what neighborhood built environmental attributes can contribute to residents’ mental health, and the mechanisms of how they can have effects by applying a multi-method qualitative study in Seoul, Korea. For this study, we interviewed 30 adult residents (age 19~49) who have lived in the four areas of Seoul. Analyzing the interview data and photos taken by the participants, we can find diverse neighborhood built environmental attributes - infrastructure for children’s care and education, everyday facilities, nature contact, transportation, street environment, safety, aesthetic characteristics, maintenance, density - can contribute to the residents’ mental health and well-being both in quantitative and qualitative aspects. This study will contribute to the advancement of this research area, which is still in its early stage in Korea, by presenting detailed lived-experience of the residents and providing a basic guideline for the future research.
