Fall Risks and Home Improvement Needs of Households with Discomfort in Move in Permanent Public Rental Housing in Cheongju-si

Abstract

This study explores the perception and experiences of fall risks at home and the needs for home improvement of households with discomfort in move in three permanent public rental housing complexes in Cheongju-si. In August and September 2021, a questionnaire survey was conducted and 390 usable responses were collected. The major findings are as follows. First, more than 20% of the respondents perceived that their housing units were not safe from the fall risks, and households with one or more persons with physical disabilities, or households using walking aids perceived the risk greater. Second, the health conditions of household members, slippery/uneven floors and steps were perceived as major fall risks. Third, male respondents showed a greater tendency to experience fall accidents, while female respondents showed a greater percentage of medical treatments due to falls. Fourth, most preferred home improvement features were wireless (remote-controlled) lighting systems, change or improvement of floorings, installation of safety grips and handrails, emergency report systems, and removal of thresholds. Fifth, the perception of fall risks was found to have a significant influence on residential satisfaction. Based on the findings, implications for home improvements in permanent public rental housing and roles of housing welfare specialists were suggested.
