A Study on the Space Grammar of Apartment Unit Plan in HCMC 호치민시 아파트 단위평면의 공간문법에 관한 연구

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find the space grammar of apartment in Vietnam by analyzing the unit plan of apartment in Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam by referring to the graph-theoretic methodology of Seo (2007). This study researched apartments which were completed after 2010 in District 2 in Ho Chi Minh City. We collected the data from websites of development companies and analyzed 19 apartment projects and 114 unit plan. The results are as follows. First, Vietnamese apartments have a living room on the front, regardless of whether their block types are tower-type or corridor-type. Second, the major order of spatial configurations was found to be E-D-L where an entrance leads directly to a dining space, the traffic center of the house, and then connects to a living room. Third, the kitchen was situated close to the entrance and accompanied by an open yard, which functioned as a service area for washing and as a space for maids. As a result, this study reveals the space grammar, a basic rule that controls the form of the unit plans of Vietnam apartments, and demonstrates the unique characteristic of the unit plans of Vietnam apartments.
