Abstract

This study divides the spatiality of space in monastic architecture into spiritual space and living space, and examines the change of coexistence between the space through three cases of different eras. In the Middle Ages, there was a prototype of a monastery architecture, and the courtyard and the corridor were actively utilized and closely related to all other areas. The spiritual area and the living area were physically adjacent. The monastery of Pavia, representing the Renaissance, is significant in that it shows the separation of the spiritual area from the living space. The monad which is the completed unit surrounds the main courtyard and constitutes a private living space, and the cathedral is physically separated by a small courtyard. In the modern La Tourette monastery, the cathedral and living space were completely separated as a mass. The two areas with opposite characteristics have the individuality through the modern interpretation of the architect while still coexisting with the same purpose inside them. Therefore, through three case studies, it can be seen that the monastery architecture is physically separated from the spiritual area, the common living space, and the private living space as time goes by in modern times.
