An Analysis of the Environmental Features of University-Based Retirement Communities : Referring to the WELL Building Standard

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to examine the design features of community spaces in the University-Based Retirement Communities(UBRCs) and analyze design factors to promote residents' well-being for planning future retirement communities in Korea. As the research methods, a literature review and case studies were conducted. For details, researchers identified planning elements that could support residents’ well-being in retirement communities through an intensive literature review, and constructed a framework for UBRCs case study based on the WELL Building Standard's movement, mind, and community categories. Using the framework, environmental features in public spaces of four types of UBRCs were analyzed. Major findings by this study are as follows: First, the future retirement community plan should consider such environmental features near university campuses as the walking environment or natural scenery. Second, a public space of the community should encourage residents' social interactions through the third place concept by Oldenburg(1989). Third, a physical accessibility between UBRCs and the university needs to be secured to enhance the mutual connection to offer lifelong learning programs to the UBRC residents. Finally, the community space should function as a multipurpose space, which can be used for community programs or events.
