Determinants of Aging in Place Intention among Older Adults - Housing Stability and Social Activity Participation -

Abstract

This study examines the determinants of older adults’ intention to aging in place (AIP) using the 2023 Korean Survey of the Elderly microdata. A hierarchical binary logistic regression model was employed to analyze the relative effects of socio-demographic characteristics, housing factors, social relationship satisfaction, social activity participation, and community resource use including digital access. The results indicate that housing stability is the most significant predictor of AIP intention. Homeownership and housing satisfaction consistently showed strong positive effects across all models. In contrast, social relationship satisfaction demonstrated a modest but significant positive effect only in the final model. Interestingly, social activity participation, cultural facility use, and smartphone use were negatively associated with AIP intention, suggesting that external engagement and digital accessibility may expand residential mobility rather than reinforce settlement. Overall, AIP intention appears to be primarily grounded in housing stability, with social resources functioning as complementary rather than primary determinants. These findings suggest that housing-centered strategies should form the core foundation of aging-in-place policy.
