A In-depth Case Study on User Behaviors and Spatial Configuration for Utilization of Outdoor Spaces in an Apartment Complex

Abstract

Since the outbreak of COVID19, outdoor spaces in apartment complexes are being used more actively, so it is very important to create desirable outdoor spaces. The uses of outdoor spaces in apartment complexes depend on various factors, and spatial configuration is one factor that changes usage behaviors. Therefore, this study aims to examine the spatial configuration and usage behaviors in an apartment complex with largest outdoor spaces recently constructed. The main method of this study is space syntax and observation survey. Firstly, in order to analyze the spatial configuration, the integration of the outdoor space was analyzed through Visibility Graph Analysis. Afterward, through observation, the frequency and behavior types of outdoor spaces by apartment residents were investigated, and the relationship between the integration and the usage behavior was analyzed. As a result, playground 1 (23.5%), playground 2 (12.6%), plaza 2 (12.6%), and rest facilities 3 (11.3%) were used the most. As a result of analyzing the relationship between the behavioral characteristics and visual integration, it was confirmed that outdoor spaces with high visibility were used more frequently. The results of this study are meaningful in providing basic data for outdoor space planning that can increase the utilization of outdoor space.
