NPP-VIIRS Annual Satellite Image Calibration Method for Interpret China’s Urbanization Process

Abstract

Targeting the shortage of NPP/VIIRS annual nighttime satellite image data, this study proposes a method to synthesize annual image data using part of NPP/VIIRS monthly image data. The synthesized annual images are corrected by a series of methods such as background noise removal, outlier removal, and unstable pixel removal. Anomalies caused by oil, natural gas or fire during the calibration process are used to remove other outliers by using the highest value recorded each year in the three cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Then, based on the correction experience of DMSP-OLD images, the annual correction is carried out. Finally, using the 2013-2020 annual image dataset in China, the results were verified by correlation analysis between the annual image DN value and China's 2013-2020 socioeconomic indicators. It was found that the corrected light image data is highly consistent with the socio-economic indicators, indicating that the synthesis method of nighttime satellite image data in this year has certain credibility.
